459. Blue Plate Special – Rick Altizer

BLUE PLATE SPECIAL (1998)

Rick Altizer

Mega-talented, multi-instrumentalist, mini-success. There are many great crimes that have been perpetrated within the Christian Music industry. One of the greatest crimes is that the average CCM fan has no idea who Rick Altizer is. There may still be time, but as of right now his name shoud be spoken in the same breath with Mark Heard, Terry Scott Taylor and Michael Roe. But then again, the average CCM fan has no idea who they are either!

Altizer’s debut soared above the rest that settles for Christian pop. Obviously influenced and helped by a writing partnership with the amazing Adrian Belew, BPS has amazing, thought-provoking, challenging and downright enjoyable pop rock gems with a touch of edge that never ventures too far into alternative. In the “real world” Rick would be a pop artist, in CCM he’s seen as edgy and avant-garde.

With wonderful doses of The Beatles and T-Rex Blue Plate Special delivers in nearly every way. Lyrically astute, musically progressive yet hook driven, performances are solid and production values are through the roof.

Yeah, I guess Rick would be classified a pop artist but in the same way The Beatles, The Kinks and The Hollies were. Not in the way Madonna, Britney or InSync are.

He has a great new album out that is pretty much a screed against entitlement and abuses of the welfare system in America.

Picked this one up at a pawn shop less than 2 years ago, and am amazed at his skills and lyrics. Definately belongs on this list.
