423. Decent Beat – Quickflight

DECENT BEAT (1983)

Quickflight

After a quirky but admittedly enjoyable debut album on Canada’s Tunesmith label called “Breakaway” the techno band called Quickflight released the quintessential keybaord/new wave album for the CCM world on the major label Star Song. Apparently infleunced by band like Kraftwerk, The Cars, OMD and Devo, their sound was spot for the time. But they, as a band, were unfortunately short lived.

Recorded exclusively using synthesizers and sequencers  the purpose was to create music using the technology rather than use the technology to try and duplicate acoustic instruments. The result is “authentically synthetic.” Very modern and creative yet at the same time completely melodic and accessible. I did read that it was also one of the first albums in CCM to be digitally mastered despite never being released on CD.

I remember being fortunate enough to see them live at the famous Southern California “Exit festival” with artists like the 77’s, Steve Taylor, Sheila Walsh and Undercover. They were really good live even though the heavily “punked out” audience did not seem to have the same appreciation for them that I did.

This would be in my top fifty albums of all time.
FANTASY was such an excellent track that it over shadowed some of the lesser tracks.
It is has been on almost every CCM sampler I have made 😉

Loved this when it came out. Glad I have digitally transferred most of my stuff 🙂

I was fortunate enough to see Quickflight twice when they were in So Cal and they put on a great live show. Fantasy was and still is a truly great song. My favorite on the album however is “Metro alien”. In concert they did a great cover of “Take me to the water”.
