426. Tha Hoodlum’s Testimony – T-Bone
THA HOODLUM’S TESTIMONY (1995)
When rap was first gaining in popularity within Christian music circles there were a handful of artists that were making strong inroads like PID, E-Roc and Gospel Gangstas, but T-Bone took sales and exposure to whole different level by becoming as much a personality as an artists. He hosted a music video show on the trinity Broadcasting Network and shared the stage with top Christian musical acts like DC Talk, Audio Adrenaline, Carman and Crystal Lewis.
The Crystal lewis owned label, Metro One, signed T-Bone to a recording contract and released his first three album. The third, and best, release was Tha Hoodlum’s testimony. T-Bones reputation was one of high speed, double speak, style rap and the use of “Spanglish” to reach out to Southern California’s Hispanic population with the Gospel.
This third release uses more a West Coast jazz influenced style then the high energy of the first two. A little more Coolio and gangsta style which was more accessible at the time. The change helped T-Bone expand his audience and begin to receive some of the best reviews of his career. Likable and yet still seen as legit, Testimony remains a testimony to the growth and acceptability of Christian rap in the CCM industry.
