390. Beauty for Ashes – Crystal Lewis

Crystal Lewis

For several years in the 90’s there were fewer Christian artists as huge as Crystal Lewis. Though recording better and more artistically satisfy releases previous to her major distribution agreement with Word Records, with Beauty for Ashes she attained a brand new level of acceptance and became one of the top two or three female artists in the industry.

Beauty for Ashes broke the Gold Record barrier and is, to date, her most successful project. It also contained several hits including the number one song of the year, “People Get Ready, Jesus is Comin’.” The song was everywhere and remains the biggest hit of her career. But it was not the only great song from the record.

The Beauty of the Cross, God’s Been Good and the title track all have made major impact on the CCM market and were responsible for the sustained success of the project. The latter features a duet with the immensely popular Black Gospel worship leader, Ron Kenoly. The title track also won an ASCAP award for being the most played song on Christian radio.

There are more Crystal Lewis projects to be discussed later that were stronger records but none of them ever came close to reaching the rare combination of great record and huge success.

By far Crystal Lewis is my favorite female Christian singer. This album really had some great tracks on it and showed a progression of her music overall. Worthy to own.

This album was my introduction to Crystal Lewis’ music. I had heard of her but had not really experienced any of her music. A pair of friends asked me to accompany their voices and play drums for a performance of “Beauty of the Cross” in our church. It was a simple stripped down arrangement but the power of the song itself conveyed so much more. It was an honour to accompany these gals and to perform music by Crystal. It opened up an even greater world of music to me which now includes Crystal Lewis.
