383. Woven and Spun – Nichole Nordeman

WOVEN AND SPUN (2002)

Nichole Nordman

Pop music, especially pop music from the world of CCM, is not necessarily noted for its artistry, originality not its authenticity and vulnerability. Not so in the case of Nichole Nordman, especially on this amazing, haunting, spiritual and stunning record. Nordman has made wonderful music for several years with strong projects before and after this release, but what came together on this project has not be duplicated.

What is so staggering about this record is its sheer simplicity. There is no big wall of sound, no slick pop with big and memorable hooks, nothing resembling the “latest trend,” and no false pretense, fabricated Nashville formulas as well. Just incredibly well crafted pop songs, sung beautifully and humbly with a real sense of transparency between artist and audience.

One great joy is that the album also created several Top 10 singles, multiple Dove Award nominations and huge sales. It is a rare combination to have this true quality receive such positive results. There are so many great songs including Legacy, Holy, I Am and a wonderful cover of Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes.” The latter is great because though she works diligently to make this version her own, she does not forget that the song itself is amazing and takes no liberties to change the song nor make it unrecognizable.

If you are like the many who have rejected CCM out of hand because of the clear majority of mediocre releases within its pop world, this is one worthy of being given a shot. It may not change your mind regarding the genre but it may help you discover one artist worthy of acclaim and consideration.

Is this the Nordeman record that Charlie Peacock produced.

Although I don’t listen to Nichole as much as I should. I have all her albums and always liked her music. I really need to push her into my song rotation.

Nice review. I agree. This is a good album and folks should get this album. I would only also say that “Brave” was another standout album by her that might be a consideration for this list.
