282. Fresh Surrender – The Archers

The Archers

The third album from the early CCM family supergroup, The Archers, remains a true classic defining the genre more than 30 years later. Fresh and contemporary for the time and loaded with top notch songwriting and a killer line-up of supporting musicians, the album transcended the genre for 1977.

The album would also be the first to elusively include just “Archers” as the full force of the group as former members Billy Rush Master and Nancye Short-Tsapralis left the group. Master would provide some songwriting on the album though. The album includes more of a creative input from Steve Archer, who, along with brother Tim and sister Janice rounded out the group. Steve would provide vocal arrangements and begin writing more including the hit, Water Into Wine, which sounds a lot like something from Keith Green.

Supporting musicians included Lee Ritenour, Dean Parks, Jim Keltner, Steely Dan alum Ben Benay and was produced by original Elvis Presley TCB Band keyboardist Larry Muhoberac. The top flight talent shows as the production was through the roof for the time and actually still sounds sonically superior today. The only group at the time that could match the quality was The Imperials.

There are so many classic songs on this album that have remained that it is not surprising to discover the album had seven charting singles! Seven!!! The title track was nominated for a Dove Award and several other reached the top of the charts. the album caused such positive results that they were invited to perform during the Grammy Awards in support of the album.

I Need You, Fresh Surrender, With Every Breath I Take, Water Into Wine and I’m Gonna Rise are all memorable pop rock classics. But it would be two ballads that would last for decades. Praise Him is still a traditional church favorite and Make Me an Instrument would become an Inspiratioonal radio favorite and become a best selling accompaniment tape for many years.

Many scoff at the genre, but when done well it is difficult to dismiss. This is not just a great record for the genre, it is a great record…period!

Personally, I really enjoyed their last project “Colors of Your Love”….musically solid and some wonderfully rich and substantive lyrics…
