116. Friction – Stavesacre

Is there a perfect hard music album?

If not, this one is as close as anyone is going to get. Powerful crunching guitars, driving bass, pounding drums and simply the most energy filled and passionate rock vocals in CCM history. That mixed with challenging and unique lyrics, stellar production and jaw dropping musical precision.

Friction also contain CCM’s “Stairway to Heaven” with the stunning and unstoppable “At the Moment.” This is the most brilliantly conceived and performed song on a Christian hard music album. Starting slow but heavy and building to an amazing crescendo musically, vocally and lyrically (complete with some Hebrew). This song alone places this album up so high, and the great joy is that it one among many great songs.

There is no pigeon-holing this band musically. Fast, hard core punk driven tunes mesh with smart, melody driven hard rock. The opening track, Threshold, sets the pace for the rest of the album with the aggressive and progressive musical and vocal attack. Loader is heavy and heavier!

Tranewreck is nowhere near a train wreck though it may be the music equivalent with its aggressive and unflinching rhythms and progressions. The total depravity and need for a Savior of the subject is believable and universal.

This supergroup of sorts has continued creating amazing music some 15 years after this great debut.

I couldn’t agree more with “At The Moment!” It may be the finest Christian Hard Rock song ever recorded! I can’t think of many hard and loud rocking songs that lead me to a place of profound worship while rocking out at the same time!!

However, my overall favorite Stavesacre album is “Speakeasy” and I would have probably ranked that one higher than “Friction” but I understand your placement of it this high considering how amazing “At The Moment” is!

James nails it, if Luther were alive today he’d write this song. I love their ability to put melody into hardcore.
